Turnout was sparse at a polling location in Richmond’s Carver neighborhood as polls opened Tuesday for Virginia’s primary election. According to the volunteers there, only a handful of people came out to vote within the first five hours.
Although Carver is among the more liberal Richmond neighborhoods, a few campaign signs showed some area voters are interested in the GOP Senate primary.
Republican George Allen is expected to win the primary and earn a shot to regain his old Senate seat against former Governor Tim Kaine (D). Recent polls show a dead heat in a general matchup between Kaine and Allen.
Virginia polls close at 7 p.m.
