A mountain of upcoming outreach goals at the Organizing for America office in Boulder, Colo., a candidate-affiliated office that aims to get young people to vote.
It’s not just reporters and analysts who are predicting a decrease in voter turnout among under-30-year-olds this presidential year; 2008 and 2004 were outliers in what has been a historically declining turnout rate since the 1960s, according to the Census Bureau.
The reason young voters turn out in such low numbers in the first place isn’t clear. One theory behind the lowered turnout expectations in 2012 is that since excitement over the idealized messages of Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign has worn off without replacement, it will be difficult to compel young and new voters into booths this November.
The Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement concluded from its research that registration strategies among youth, or lack thereof, could be the cause of low turnout.
In Colorado, multiple organizations work tirelessly and year-round to register young voters. New Era Colorado and candidate or party-affiliated organizations like Organizing for America approach young people on college campuses, at farmers’ markets, door-to-door and by phone to urge registration and voting in 2012.
