Although the Supreme Court last month shot down Montana’s bid to undo the Citizens United ruling at the state level, the debate over the court’s 2010 campaign finance decision is going to remain hot topic this election.
A group of students at the University of Colorado at Boulder are working with the I-News Network to create a tool similar to California’s Rainmaker tracker to monitor campaign contributions to and from Colorado.
Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) co-sponsored an unsuccessful resolution in 2011 to amend the U.S. Constitution contributions and expenditures section. People for the American Way provides a list of state and local resolutions that have passed as antitheses to the ruling.
Before Republican Mitt Romney made his “corporations are people” gaffe last summer, he more expressed his support Citizens United by turning the rhetoric on President Obama. Romney painted Obama as a sore loser in the ordeal in this 2010 speech, saying that labor and media corporations cannot be the only groups with a right to free speech.
“One of the largest states in the nation took an official stand Thursday against the Supreme Court’s 2010 decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which ruled that government restriction of corporation or union spending on political campaigns violated the First Amendment right to free speech.
“California joins Hawaii, Vermont, Rhode Island, Maryland and New Mexico in calling for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court ruling.”
