Missouri state Rep. John McCaherty (R) is gaining attention after the Sunlight Foundation blogged on his efforts to raise money for his campaign by auctioning off an AR-15 rifle.
The fundraiser was planned prior to the Colorado massacre last week, when suspect James Holmes allegedly brought the same model gun into the theater.
McCaherty’s campaign emailed supporters after the Dispatch’s report, saying he would ignore the media’s questions about the event and urging them to do the same. The drawing will be held Aug. 27. Tickets are $25.
An earlier version of this post incorrectly stated the raffle was to benefit the Sunlight Foundation. The Sunlight Foundation reported the event but did not benefit from it. The 12 regrets the error.
