Although he died in 2007, former Missouri Sen. Thomas F. Eagleton is a reminder to Romney to pick his running mate carefully.
In 1972, Sen. Eagleton was tapped to be George McGovern’s running mate in his race against President Nixon. At the time, McGovern didn’t know anything of Eagleton’s medical history: He had been hospitalized for nervous exhaustion on three prior occasions, and twice received electroshock therapy.
Eagleton stepped down just six days after his treatments became public, 18 days after being selected as the vice-presidential nominee.
