For the first time ever, the Democratic National Convention plans to officially support same-sex marriage in its party platform. And it may be due to President Obama’s support.

“Now that the president has come [forward] in such a way and talked about his support in such powerful terms, and of meeting with parents of his kids’ friends who are gay and lesbian, that took away any real concern about having this as a plank,” said Marc Solomon, national campaign director for Freedom to Marry, a nonpartisan marriage equality group.
