“
That’s several million kids who actually want to get involved in the democratic process. They don’t deserve to be dissed. But former Gov. Romney also blew off Letterman and Big Bird, so I guess we’re in good company.”
-Linda Ellerbee, host of “Kids Pick the President: The Candidates” on Nickelodeon. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney declined taking part in the show where candidates answer questions from children. Romney’s campaign has not released a statement, but Ellerbee said the campaign told the network he didn’t have time. Since the program began running in 1992, only two other candidates have declined participation: 2004’s Democratic candidate, John Kerry declined which prompted then-President George W. Bush to withdraw. Romney has until Monday to opt back into participating in the program.
The special invites children to vote online following the airing and the vote has correctly predicted the election outcome five out of six times. In 2000, the one time the vote did not match up with the actual election, children picked Al Gore over Bush.
President Barack Obama will be participating in the special, which is set to air Oct. 15. (via The Washington Post)
