A statewide prescription monitoring program was signed into law Tuesday by Gov. John Lynch. The law aims to help medical professionals track patients who may be abusing painkillers and prescription drugs.
According to New Hampshire Attorney General Michael Delaney, drug-related deaths have surpassed traffic fatalities in New Hampshire during four of the last five years, and New Hampshire teens are abusing drugs at a higher rate than teens nationally.
The law gives the New Hampshire Board of Pharmacy the responsibility to contract with a third party in order to create and operate a database that will track the distribution of controlled prescription drugs such as Oxycodone, Adderall, and Vicodin.
