agriculture

  1. Agriculture is important to Missouri, so it’s disappointing to learn that 80 percent of the farm bill is food stamp spending. That should be addressed separately. I will oppose bills that create burdensome regulations or increase costs to taxpayers. But there are important aspects of the farm bill, such as crop insurance, that require a strong familiarity with farm families and their needs.”

Sarah Steelman, one of the Republican candidates to challenge Sen. Claire McCaskill (D),  on a half-trillion-dollar farm bill passed by the U.S. Senate on June 21. According to this bill, farm subsidies and land conservation spending will be cut by about $2 billion a year in the course of five years. McCaskill and Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) both voted for the bill.

  2. Missouri Senators Claire McCaskill and Roy Blunt are pushing for legislation that will include a five-year, half-trillion dollar piece of legislation that is known as the Farm Bill. The bill deals with food policy, conservation, research, and promoting sustainability.

One of the complexities of the bill has to do with the amount of proposed amendments including one that changes government support of farmers from direct payments to subsidized crop insurance. The legislators discussed over 200 proposed amendments, many rooted in election year posturing and are only marginally related to farms and food production.

Sen. McCaskill said that she wants to sponsor an amendment that will create a new position of chief of agricultural counsel at the EPA.

The bill has already been approved by the Missouri State Senate and is awaiting passage in the House.
